Barocco Foundation, in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa, invites you to an inspiring lunchtime concert, Fire and Brimstone – Sacred Arias and Songs, on Tuesday, 10 November at 12:30 pm at Our Lady of Victory Church in Valletta. Featuring acclaimed baritone Ken Scicluna, accompanied by the brilliant Mro. Abraham D’Amato, this carefully curated programme promises a compelling musical journey through the grandeur, drama and spiritual intensity of sacred vocal music.
Bringing together masterpieces by some of the greatest composers of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, the concert explores themes of faith, redemption, divine power and human devotion. The programme opens with Alessandro Stradella’s moving Pietà, Signore, followed by Joseph Haydn’s dramatic Rolling foaming billows from The Creation, a vivid musical portrayal of the forces of nature. George Frideric Handel’s The people that walked in darkness and The trumpet shall sound, both from The Messiah, offer contrasting expressions of hope, resurrection and triumph.
The dramatic intensity continues with three celebrated arias from Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah: Is not His word like a fire, Lord God of Abraham and It is enough. The programme also ventures beyond the traditional sacred repertoire with Arthur Sullivan’s deeply moving The Lost Chord, a meditation on the transcendent power of music, and Nicholas Brodszky’s uplifting I’ll Walk with God from the operetta The Student Prince, a heartfelt expression of faith and perseverance.
This concert offers music lovers an opportunity to enjoy an exceptional programme of vocal music while discovering the emotional depth and enduring beauty of works that continue to resonate across generations.
