Handel's Opera Arias

Handel’s Opera Arias

Friday 9th May 2014

Soprano Dorothy Baldacchino will be giving a sparkling performance of Handel’s opera arias at the Oratory of St. Francis Church in Valletta on Friday 9th May 2014 at 12:30pm.

Handel’s arias are considered to be masterpieces of the Baroque Opera and Ms. Bezzina will be performing a selection of the most charming arias that Handel wrote.  Her repertoire will feature arias from “Giulio Cesare in Egitto”, “Serse” “Semele” and “Rinaldo”.  Ms. Baldacchino will be accompanied on the piano by Ramona Zammit Formosa who will also be playing solo piano music.

Dorothy studies voice and interpretation under the direction of soprano Miriam Cauchi.  Dorothy read a B.A. (Hons) in Theatre Studies at the University of Malta, attaining a distinction for her dissertation tracing the pedagogical approaches towards the synthesis of the actor-singer-musician in opera.

Dorothy featured in several recitals and opera productions both locally and internationally. She participated in the Internationale Musikatage fur Jugendliche, Germany, and in the United Kingdom with the Dorset Opera’s production of Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de Perles. In 2007, she was Pamina in the children's adaptation of Mozart's The Magic Flute at the Manoel Theatre. Her repertoire includes Pergolesi, Handel, Mozart and Bernstein.

Dorothy received guidance in actor training with Aleateia Theatre Group, with whom she participated in premiere productions locally and internationally such as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with Drowning Lilies receiving excellent reviews. A believer in the holistic performer, Dorothy worked into direction and production as assistant stage director to Italian director Mario Corradi for the productions of Verdi’s Macbeth (Teatru Astra - Gozo, 2007), Puccini’s Turandot (Teatru Astra – Gozo, 2008), Gonoud’s Romeo et Juliette (Teatro Coccia – Novara Italy, 2009) and Verdi’s Rigoletto (Teatru Astra – Gozo, 2009). She assisted as well Marco Gandini for the production of Puccini's La Traviata (Teatru Astra - Gozo, 2010). Dorothy has also worked in voice drama workshops aimed for children with special needs

The baroque Oratory, which hosts the performances, is an exquisite venue, which complements the fine music.  The events are also fund raising events for the Franciscan Church.
