Join us for an enchanting lunchtime concert on Tuesday 19 November at 12:30pm at Our Lady of Victory church, Valletta. This recital, celebrating the vibrant and diverse sounds of Latin American classical guitar features brilliant guitarist Bernard Catania. These popular lunchtime concerts are organised by Barocco Foundation in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa.
The concert will open with “Prelude No.1” and “Choros No.1” by Heitor Villa-Lobos, two iconic pieces the show the Brazilian composer’s innovative approach to guitar music. Following these, the programme will feature “Preludio Triston” by Máximo Diego Pujol, a poignant work that captures the emotional depth and lyrical beauty characteristic of Pujol’s style. The recital will continue with “El Negrito” by Antonio Lauro, a lively piece that reflects the Venezuelan folk tradition. Next, Bernard will perform “La Gatica” and “Vals Venezolano No.2”, both of which embody the charm and grace of Latin American rhythms. These will be followed by “Un Día de Noviembre” and “Cación de Cuna (Berceuse)” by Leo Brouwer, further highlighting emotional depth and beauty of the repertoire.
Experience the emotional depth of “Sons de Carrilhões” by João Pernambuco, a piece rich in melody and sentiment. The programme will also feature two masterpieces by Agustí Barrios: “Julia Florida”, known for its delicate beauty, and “La Catedral (Allegro)”, a vibrant work that showcases the brillance of the guitar. This concert will conclude with “Verano Porteño” by Astor Piazzolla, a passionate and dynamic piece that captures the essence of Argentine tango. Finally, the performance will feature two works by José Luis Merlin: “Evocacion” an evocative piece and “Joropo”, which brings the lively spirit of Venezuelan music to life.
