Melodies Across Borders

Melodies Across Borders

Our Lady of Victory church in Valletta will once again host it’s popular weekly lunchtime concert organised by Barocco Foundation in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa. This delightful concert features promising soprano Cledia Micallef accompanied by brilliant pianist Elaine Mercieca and will take place on Tuesday 12 November at 12:30pm.

Melodies Across Borders features melodic song cycles from different countries, such as Britain, France, Poland and Malta, amongst others.  The intruiging programme begins with Four Songs Op.14 by Roger Quilter, a delightful set that captures a range of moods and scenes: Autumn Evening – a gentle introspective piece, April – a light and lyrical song that captures the freshness of spring. These will be followed by A Last Year’s Rose which is a poingnant reflection on the passage of time and fading beauty, and Song of the Blackbird – an evocative and melodious piece that celebrates the blackbird’s enchanting song. Elaine will perform two solo pieces, Deep River Op.59 No.9 by S. Coleridge-Taylor and Chopin’s “Prelude Op.28 No.15

The concert will continue with four songs from Francis Poulenc’s “Air Chantés” FP 46, namely Air Romantique, Air Champêtre, a light and pastoral song. These will be followed by Air Grave which is a more sombre and reflective piece and Air Vif, an energetic and lively song that concludes this set with flair.  To conclude this delightful programme Cledia will perform two Maltese songs by local composer Alex Vella Gregory, Il-Ħadd Filghaxija, an evocative piee that reflects the calm and nostalgia of a Sunday evening and L-Ghorfa,  a heartfelt and melodic song that captures the essence of Maltese culture and emotion.
