Libertango!
Guitarist Evan Plumpton and flautist Fiorella Camilleri are presenting a programme of exciting rhythms and sensual Latin inspired music. The concert will be held on Wednesday 1 May 2013 at 8pm at Palazzo de Piro Cultural Centre, Mdina.
The guitar and flute concert will feature the famous and sensual Libertango which was composed by the Argentinean tango composer and bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla. The Libertango movements will all be performed: Histoire du Tango - Bordel 1900- Cafe 1930 - Night club 1960 - Concert d'Aujourd Hui, showing Piazzollas new style, termed nuevo tango. His style incorporated elements from jazz and classical music. A virtuoso bandoneist, Piazzolla regularly performed his own compositions with a variety of ensembles and performed internationally.
The Libertango! Concert will also feature Pacoca (Choro) by Celso Machaco; the highly-suggestive Carmen Fantasie by Francois Borne, inspired from Bizets Carmen and the flamboyant Granada composed by the Mexican composer Agustin Lara.
Guitarist Evan Plumpton started guitar lessons at the tender age of 7. Having obtained the FLCM (guitar performing), and A Mus VCM (theory) Evan furthered his studies with Simon Schembri (Malta), John Mills and Carlos Bonell (England) and Domenico Spada (Italy). He holds a B. A. (Hons) degree from the University of Malta in Guitar Performance and is currently teaching at the Johann Strauss School of Music in Valletta.
Evan performs regularly in established venues around the island including the Manoel Theatre. Worthy of note is his rendition of Vivaldis guitar concerto with the National Orchestra which was held at the Presidents Palace to great critical acclaim. He frequently holds recitals for local Television and radio stations. Recently, Evan represented Malta in the first guitar festival held in Tunisia, organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.
In July 2006, Evan took part in the International Guitar Festival held in England. This event gave him the opportunity to meet with esteemed professional guitarist amongst whom John Williams, Julian Bream and Alirio Diaz.
Flautist Fiorella Camilleri completed her Bachelors degree
in International Relations at the University of Malta, followed by her studies
in Catania, Sicily, with Prof. Salvatore Vella. Ms. Camilleri continued
specializing piccolo flute playing with Prof. Nicola Mazzanti (solo piccolo of the
Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Italy). During 2006 2007, Londons Trinity College
of Music awarded her the prestigious ATCL and
ATCL Diplomas in performance with distinction.
Following her successful studies
in 2007, she was also awarded the Young Musician Award, award given by the
Maltas Society of Arts, allowing her to attend the Thames Valley University
where she took lessons and masterclasses with many distinguished Professors
including Christine Hankin and Jonathan Snowden.
Ms. Camilleri has taken part in masterclases with Prof. Peter Lucas Graft, Marina Piccinini. Andrea Oliva. Andrea Griminelli, Giuseppe Nova and others. She is currently the co- principal and lead piccolo player at the Malta Philharmonic and is also following the Masters degree in flute performance (Biennio specialistico di Flauto) in Modena, Italy, in the class of Prof. Michelle Marasco, Gabriele Betti and Andrea Oliva.
