Golden Classics

Barocco Foundation in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa, invites you for an enchanting afternoon of music featuring inspiring mezzo-soprano Vanessa Vassallo and talented pianist Natalia Rakhmatulina.  This recital will be held at the magnificent Our Lady of Victory church, Valletta on 14 May 2024 at 12:30pm.

The intruiging programme  opens with the exquisite Per la gloria d’adorarvi by Giovanni Bononcini.  Following this, we delve into the tender serenade Amrilli, mia bella by Alessandro Scarlatti, a beloved favourite that promises to touch the heartstrings of all who listen. Our musical journey unfolds with two timeless Italian baroque  compositions, the ethereal strains of Vergin tutto amor by Francesco Durante and Antonio Caldara’s Alma del core, which beckons us to explore the depths of the soul’s longing and passion.

During this captivating concert the esteemed pianist, Natalia Rakhmatulina will grace us with two deligthful piano solos.  Continuing our musical  journey, we present two vocal gems that highlight the elegance and romance of the classical era.  Nina by Vincenzo Ciampi which enchants with its tender melody followed by Caro mio ben by Tommaso Giordani.  Our musical journey draws to a close with the sublime beauty of Antonio Caldara’s Pur dicesti, O bocca bella and the celestial piece by Caccini, Ave Maria.

The Church of Our Lady of Victory is a magnificent setting for cultural events, with its painted ceiling by baroque artist Alessio Erardi. It is the first church of Valletta, built by Grand Master de Valette and the Order of St John after their victory in the Great Siege of 1565.  It has been restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa, voluntary National Trust of Malta. 

After the concert, patrons are invited for free to the cellar of the church to watch a short documentary about the building, history, and the restoration of this gem.
