Trumpet Thrills – A trumpet and piano concert

Join us for an enchanting midday escape with our upcoming lunchtime concert at Our Lady of Victory church, Valletta.  This recital organised by Barocco Foundation in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa takes place on Tuesday 7 May 2024 at 12:30pm and features a dynamic duo of skilled trumpeter Jason Camilleri and outstanding pianist Milica Lawrence.

Experience the captivating journey of sound as our intriguing programme unfolds with Philipe White’s, “Flourish for a Festive Occasion”, and a timeless beauty from Johann Sebastian Bach, “Aria from Cantata no.43”, expertly arranged by Robert Nagel. The programme continues with the evocative melodies of Robert Stewart’s “Three Sketches for Trumpet and Piano”, where each movement unveils a unique musical landscape, brimming with colour and texture.   Then, venture into the enchanting world of Andrew Wilson’s “The White HillTas-Salvatur” from the Sonatina “The Three Hills”, which was composed and dedicated to Jason Camilleri.

Following this intriguing journey, the pianist will take centre stage for a spellbinding solo performance.  This delightful concert concludes with a heartfelt rendition of “My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose”, arranged by Denzil Stephens, and by the joy of new beginnings with Richard Phil’s “New Life”.

The Church of Our Lady of Victory is a magnificent setting for cultural events, with its painted ceiling by baroque artist Alessio Erardi. It is the first church of Valletta, built by Grand Master de Valette and the Order of St John after their victory in the Great Siege of 1565.  It has been restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa, voluntary National Trust of Malta.

After the concert, patrons are invited for free to the cellar of the church to watch a short documentary about the building, history, and the restoration of this gem.
