Classic Songs from Movies and Broadway for Baritone and Piano

Barocco Foundation in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa invites you to a musical journey through timeless melodies during their upcoming luchtime concert on 23 January 2024 at Our Lady of Victory church, Valletta.  This concert featuring inspiring baritone Ken Scicluna and brilliant pianist Sophia Narmania, takes us to an enchanting world of classic songs from movies and Broadway, starting at 12:30pm.

The captivating programme starts with the elegance of  Charade by Henri Mancini followed by Frederick Loewe’s masterpiece If Ever I Would Leave You which captures the essence of enduring love. The vivacious rhythm and spirited lyrics of Sigmund Romberg’s Drinking Song will create a lively atmosphere whereas the soulful melody by Herman Hupefeld,  HHAs Time Goes By will evoke wonderful memories and emotions.

This enthralling concert proceeds with the iconic piece by  Stephen Sondheim, Send in the Clowns and the Broadway classic If I were a Rich Man by Jerry Bock.  Experience the romantic allure of the timeless ballad Be My Love by Nicholas Brodzsky followed by the same author’s celestial beauty of I’ll walk with God.  Our programme unfolds with the beautiful powerful Stars by Claude-Michel Schönberg and the inspirational The Impossible Dream by Mitch Leigh followed by the charming melody of Moon River by Henry Mancini. The folk-inspiring piece Juravil by Frenkel will let you appreciate the beauty of music across different traditions.

The grand finale of this memorable programme includes the smooth jazz piece On Days like These by Quincy Jones, the vibrant sound of Boloslovskava by Temnaya Noch, followed by the iconic New York, New York by John Kander and the romantic classic by Bert Kaempfert  Strangers in the Night.

Besides enjoying the fascinating music, the Church of Our Lady of Victory itself is worth a visit. Seeping with history and rich in architecture and artistic works, mainly due to it being the first church of Valletta and its painted baroque ceiling by Alessio Erardi, Our Lady of Victory is one of Malta’s richest treasures.  Built by Grand Master de Valette and the Order of St John after their victory in the Great Siege of 1565, it has been restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa, voluntary National Trust of Malta.

After the concert, patrons are invited for free to the cellar of the church to watch a short audio-visual show about the building, history and the restoration of this gem.
